Course: VFX-001 Software Used: DaVinci Resolve

Introduction

Video editing is not just about cutting and joining clips—it is about transforming raw footage into a meaningful story. For this task, I worked with DaVinci Resolve, a powerful software widely used in the film industry. What makes Resolve unique is its dedicated pages that separate each stage of production—media management, editing, effects, colour grading, sound, and final delivery.

By understanding these pages, I could follow a professional workflow while completing Level One, where I imported my clips, applied transitions, synced background music, and exported the final output.

DaVinci Resolve Pages

  • Media Page

The starting point of every project. Used to import video, audio, and images into the Media Pool. Files can be organized into bins (folders) for easy access. For level One: I imported all my clips and music here.

  • Cut Page

Designed for quick editing and assembly of clips. Timeline is simplified for beginners. Useful for making fast rough cuts before detailed editing. For Level One: I focused more on the Edit Page, but knowing the Cut Page helps in faster workflows.

  • Edit Page

The heart of DaVinci Resolve. Contains a multi-track timeline, preview monitors, and toolbars. Allows trimming, ripple edits, transitions, and adding effects. For Level One: Placed my clips on the timeline. Applied transitions between clips. Adjusted timing for smooth flow.

  • Fusion Page

A node-based system for visual effects and motion graphics. Used for tasks like text animations, 3D effects, or compositing. For Level One: Not directly used, but crucial for advanced stages.

  • Color Page

Dedicated to color correction and color grading. Provides scopes (waveform, parade, vectorscope) to balance colors. Enhances mood, contrast, and tone of the video. For Level One: I kept natural colors but learned how grading is applied here.

  • Fairlight Page

Specialized for audio editing and mixing. Allows noise reduction, EQ adjustments, and multi-track mixing. For Level One: I adjusted audio levels slightly to keep music balanced.

  • Deliver Page

Final step of the workflow. Used to export the project in different formats (MP4, MOV, etc.). Supports custom resolution, frame rate, and codec settings. For Level One: I exported my project in MP4 format as required.

-My Workflow for Level One

For Level One, I followed these steps: 1.Imported Media: Added all clips and music into the Media Pool. 2.Editing: Worked in the Edit Page to place clips on the timeline. 3.Transitions: Added smooth transitions (cross dissolve, dip to color) between every clip. 4.Music: Imported the background track and placed it in the audio timeline. 5.Syncing: Adjusted timing so video cuts matched the rhythm of the music. 6.Final Adjustments: Trimmed any extra gaps and ensured flow was natural. 7.Export: Used the Deliver Page to export the final video as per the required format.

Conclusion

Completing Level One of VFX-001 in DaVinci Resolve gave me a clear understanding of the basic workflow in professional video editing. From importing clips into the Media Pool, editing on the Edit Page, applying transitions, syncing with music, and finally exporting the output, I was able to experience each stage of the process. This task not only strengthened my technical knowledge of DaVinci Resolve’s pages but also improved my ability to think creatively about storytelling through video. Level One served as a strong starting point, preparing me for more advanced editing challenges ahead.
