Introduction & Installation of DaVinci Resolve

Video editing is a course that many people take to enhance their content, whether they are new or experienced creators. In my opinion, DaVinci Resolve offers numerous advantages for video editing. We will be using DaVinci Resolve, one of the most popular and user-friendly video editing software programs available, which is also open-source.

To install DaVinci Resolve, you can visit the Chrome browser and select the free version, or simply click on the link provided on the Blackmagic Design website: link

Media Page

It usually takes a bit of time to open completely. You may get something like below: The first and foremost thing we come across after downloading the DaVinci Resolve is to know the page and the locations of different available tools. We can see a page something like this: After clicking on the untitled project : To open the media interface, click on the logo at the bottom which is to the immediate left of the highlighted logo. We will be able to see a similar page as that below: The Media page shown above is used for different media pages, which contain clips of video from different folders on the left portion of the page. This makes it easy for us to open the required picture or clip whenever needed. To select your desired file just select the location of the file from the drives shown on the left or you can also browse through your documents and when you find that particular file just drag it to the media pool another way is to right-click on the media page and then import files. If a file is used frequently you can also add it to favorite by right-clicking on it.

Edit & Cut Page

For learning the concepts of edit pages I mainly made use of the Blackmagic website for learning it: link You get the above picture when you open your edit page. You can drag the files from the media pool into the timeline. There are many topics under this. We can directly add any clip or image into the timeline using concepts like insert, overwrite, replace, fit to fill, place on top, append at the end, and ripple overwrite. These are the 7 ways to edit your page with edit overlay. They all have different operations such as –

  • Insert: Inserts a clip into the timeline at the location of the playhead and pushes everything else down to make room for it.
  • Overwrite: When you perform an overwrite, it will place a new clip on the timeline at the location of the playhead, writing over whatever clip or clips were there before.
  • Replace: Replace a single clip on the timeline with one of the same length.
  • Fil to fill: Fit to fill takes the portion of the clip that you have marked and adds a speed change to speed it up or slow it down.
  • Place on top: The place on top command puts the clip you’re adding to the timeline on the next available video track at the location of the playhead
  • Append at end: Append at end places the source clip after the last edit on your timeline, regardless of where the play head is located
  • Ripple overwrite: Ripple overwrite replaces a shot of one length with a shot of a different length.

The above image shows some features of trimming the clips. There are many types of it such as

  • Roll: Here we can trim the clip from both sides and the overall length of the timeline remains the same as one gets shortened and the other side gets extended.
  • Ripple: Here timeline doesn’t remain the same it is either pushed or pulled inside to adjust as per requirement.
  • Slip: Slipping changes the portion of a clip that you see in the timeline by moving its "in" and "out" points
  • Slide: It’s used to slide the position of the clip through the timeline without changing its length.

Under Edit, we have features like transitions and effects, using which various transitions and effects can be added to clips or pictures. You can click on the effects option at the top left corner. You can make audio adjustments by locking a particular moment in the clip and then moving it to increase or decrease the volume. Next, we can also incorporate various title styles and positions in our videos you can also change the color of the background and text using settings.

Task 1 & 2

Fairlight Page and Deliver

DaVinci Resolve has its own built-in audio editor which helps make the video look more professional. We can simply drag an audio file into the media pool and then open the fairlight by clicking on audio sound at the bottom right corner the timeline We can create multiple audio tracks, such as intro and outro audio, and then drag the desired audio into the timelines. DaVinci Fairlight also provides a wide range of audio effects, such as compression, reverb, etc. They can be used, and at the same time, it also provides some special settings. It also has fade out and fade in which can be achieved by also using cross fade To remove noise disturbances in the background, we can use noise reduction from Fairlight effects, or to remove specific disturbances, we can use the equalizer from the mixer panel. In DaVinci Resolve, the video format determines the file type and codec, impacting compatibility and qualityIn the Render Settings panel on the left, choose a preset or set custom options: If your project includes subtitles, ensure they are enabled in the Subtitle Settings.

  1. Once all settings are configured:
  • Click Add to Render Queue.
  • Your export will appear in the Render Queue panel on the right.
  1. Click Start Render to begin exporting your video.
