Installation

To install DaVinci Resolve, I visited the official Blackmagic Design website and clicked the "Free Download" button. I selected the correct version for my operating system and followed the installation prompts. The process was seamless, and DaVinci Resolve was successfully installed on my system without any errors.

The Media Page

The Media Page or interface is used for importing the files that you would want to edit.
I opened the application and created a new project. In the Media Page, I imported and organized my files, including videos, audio, and images. I easily added files to the Media Pool by dragging and dropping them. a

The Cut Page

The Cut Page is similar to the Edit Page but is primarily used when working with multiple video clips, such as in short films or movies. Unlike the Edit Page, which relies on the blade tool for cutting, the Cut Page allows for quicker and easier trimming or cutting of unwanted parts.

Shortcut Keys in the Cut Page:

  • L: Plays the video forward.
  • Pressing L repeatedly: Increases the playback speed in the forward direction.
  • K: Pauses or stops the video playback.
  • J: Plays the video backward.
  • Pressing J repeatedly: Increases the reverse playback speed.
  • K + L: Plays the video forward in slow motion.
  • K + J: Plays the video backward in slow motion.

Features:

The Cut Page also features two timelines:

  1. Top Timeline (Blue Bar): Offers a broad overview of the entire video.
  2. Bottom Timeline: Provides a zoomed-in view for precise editing. b

The Edit Page

In DaVinci Resolve, the Edit Page is the primary hub for video editing. This streamlined interface enables efficient assembly and manipulation of video clips.

Key Components:

  1. Timeline: The central timeline allows for arranging and sequencing video clips, audio tracks, effects, and transitions. Clips can be easily dragged, dropped, trimmed, and repositioned.
  2. Media Pool: Located top-left, the Media Pool contains imported media assets, including video clips, audio files, images, and graphics. Assets can be dragged directly onto the timeline for editing.
  3. Inspector Panel: Located top-right, the Inspector Panel provides detailed controls for selected timeline elements, allowing adjustments to position, scale, rotation, opacity, and more.
  4. Transitions and Effects: Adding transitions and effects is straightforward. Transitions can be dragged from the Effects Library directly onto the timeline between clips.
  5. Audio Editing: While advanced audio editing is done on the Fairlight Page, basic audio adjustments can be made on the Edit Page, including audio level adjustments, basic effects, and track management.

The Fairlight Page

I haven’t explored the Fairlight Page in depth yet, but I plan to work on it and learn more.

Steps to Remove Background Noise:

  1. Select the audio channel from the mixer.
  2. Click on the plus sign, choose Restoration, and select Noise Reduction.

I used the Fairlight Page to remove background noise from a video as an assignment.

Deliver Page

After completing the editing phase in DaVinci Resolve's Edit Page, I moved to the Deliver Page to render the final music video. This step ensures the video meets the required technical specifications, such as resolution and file size, making it ready for online sharing.

Summary

To create my video, I used four main pages in DaVinci Resolve: Media, Cut, Edit, and Deliver.

  1. In the Media Page, I imported all the necessary media files for my project by dragging them into the pool.
  2. From the Cut Page, I selected the necessary portions of the video. Most of the editing work can also be done here.
  3. In the Edit Page, I added transitions to my video clips using the Effects option, mostly using the dissolve transition. I also added text to my video using the Title option and customized the font size, line spacing, and color using the Inspector.
  4. Finally, in the Deliver Page, I rendered my video in MP4 format, using the default resolution settings. I chose a location to save my video and clicked "Render All" to export the final product, which I then uploaded to YouTube.
