OSCILLOSCOPE ART

The objective of this project is to showcase the oscilloscope in the marvel lab by generating and displaying a unique graphical pattern in it. An innovative way to generate images using sound. By sending stereo audio signals to an oscilloscope in XY mode, the display can visualize pictures and animations instead of traditional waveforms.

In this method, one audio channel controls the horizontal (X) axis and the other controls the vertical (Y) axis of the oscilloscope. By carefully designing the audio waveform, specific patterns and shapes can be drawn on the oscilloscope screen.

Process:

  1. Start with an image and convert it to a SVG (vector image) through a tool called Inkscape.
  2. Convert the SVG paths into stereo WAV audio using a program called “Rabiscopio”, where the left and right channels correspond to X and Y coordinates.
  3. Play the WAV file through a stereo output connected to the oscilloscope’s X and Y inputs.
  4. The oscilloscope draws the original SVG image in real time.

Overall, this project demonstrates a creative fusion of computer graphics, audio synthesis, and analog display technology, turning sound into art.
