Report of VFX course:
Installation of Davinci resolve 20:⬇️
➡️First, I went to the Marvel UVCE website. In the VFX course section, I clicked a link that directed me to the Blackmagic Design website, where I downloaded the free version of DaVinci Resolve 20. Then, I installed it on my laptop. When I opened it, a tab appeared prompting me to create a new project. After I opened the new project, I saw several tabs, which I will explain as we move forward.
Introduction to pages and tabs of Davinci Resolve 20:
There are 7 pages in DaVinci Resolve, they are:
- Media Page.
- Cut Page.
- Edit Page.
- Fusion Page.
- Color Page.
- Fairlight Page.
- Deliver Page.
▫️1) Media page:
In the Media Page Layout section, I found the following pages, which I have listed and explained below,
- Media Storage Panel:- You’ll find this Media Storage panel in the top-left corner of the interface. This panel allows you to browse your computer’s drives and folders to locate and import files.
- Viewer:- You'll find this viewer in top-center of the interface, When you select a clip in the Media Storage panel, it plays in the preview window. Here, you can perform basic playback functions such as play, pause, and scrubbing through the timeline. You can also mark In and Out points, and choose to play either the audio or video portion of the clip.
- Media Pool:- You'll find this media pool in the bottom-center of the interface, serves as the project library where all media for editing is stored; it includes a default Master Bin (root folder) from which users can create additional bins like Videos, Music, VFX, and Titles—making it a good practice to organize footage here before starting the edit.
- Metadata Panel:- You'll find this metadata panel in the right side of the interface, displays detailed information about the selected clip—such as resolution (e.g., 1920x1080), frame rate (24/30/60fps), duration, and audio channels—and also allows users to input additional metadata like Scene, Take, Camera, and Keywords to streamline future searches.
▫️2) Cut Page:
In the Cut Page Layout section, I found the following panels, which I have listed and explained below:
- Media Pool: Found in the top-left corner; it stores all imported media and can be organized in bins starting from the default Master Bin.
- Viewer: Found in the top-center of the interface; used to preview either source clips or the active timeline. You can play, pause, scrub, and mark In/Out points here.
- Dual Timeline: Found in the bottom-center; offers two timelines, the top one giving a zoomed-out view of the entire project and the bottom one providing a detailed, frame-level view for precise editing.
▫️3) Edit Page:
In the Edit Page Layout section, I found the following panels, which I have listed and explained below:
- Media Pool / Effects Library: Found in the top-left corner; the Media Pool contains all clips and bins, while the Effects Library provides access to transitions, titles, and video/audio effects.
- Source Viewer: Found in the top-center (left side); allows previewing of clips before adding them to the timeline, with options to mark In and Out points.
- Timeline: Found in the bottom-center; a multi-track editing workspace where you arrange, trim, and refine video and audio clips.
- Inspector: Found on the right side of the interface; provides detailed controls for the selected clip such as position, zoom, rotation, cropping, opacity, speed, and audio adjustments.
🔸Before exploring the other pages, I would like to present Assignment 1, which I completed using the first three pages of the interface
TASK: EDIT PAGE
▫️Assignment 1: Create a 30-second video using the Edit Page, incorporating cuts, transitions, and basic audio adjustments.
I collected videography clips related to wildlife sanctuaries from social media to create an edited video. As I am a nature enthusiast, I selected random animal footage for the project. Initially, I added text effects to give viewers a hint about the video content. After that, I trimmed the required portions of the clips and applied transitions such as glow, foreground wipe, crash zoom, brightness flash, and zoom in/out. The video was concluded with a fade-out effect, followed by a text fade-in effect displaying the message “Nature is Future”, along with my name under the title Kuppal Creation.

▫️Assignment 2: Create a fast-paced 1-minute social media video using the Cut Page, focusing on storytelling and quick assembly.
i will update it soon🔜...
