Task 12: Soldering Prerequisites

Objective

To learn about the soldering equipment available in the laboratory and understand the function of tools such as solder, soldering iron, soldering wick, and flux used in electronic circuit assembly.

Introduction

Soldering is a process used to join electronic components to a circuit board using a filler metal called solder. It is widely used in electronics to create reliable electrical and mechanical connections between components and printed circuit boards (PCBs).

In the laboratory, several tools and materials are used to perform soldering effectively and safely.

Soldering Equipment

1. Soldering Iron

A soldering iron is the primary tool used in soldering. It is a handheld device that heats up and melts the solder so that it can flow between electronic components and PCB pads.

Features

  • Metal tip that transfers heat
  • Electrically heated element
  • Handle for safe holding

Typical temperature range: 300°C – 400°C.

2. Solder

Solder is a fusible metal alloy used to create a permanent connection between components and circuit boards.

Common types

  • Lead-based solder (Sn-Pb)
  • Lead-free solder (Sn-Ag-Cu)

Properties

  • Low melting point
  • Good electrical conductivity
  • Strong mechanical bonding

3. Flux

Flux is a chemical cleaning agent used during soldering.

Functions

  • Removes oxidation from metal surfaces
  • Improves the flow of solder
  • Ensures stronger and cleaner joints

Flux can be available in liquid, paste, or gel form.

4. Soldering Wick

A soldering wick (desoldering braid) is a braided copper wire used to remove excess solder from a circuit.

Working

  • The wick is placed over the solder joint.
  • When heated with the soldering iron, the molten solder is absorbed into the braid through capillary action.

This tool is useful for correcting soldering mistakes.
